Breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry, we caught up with one of our female HGV drivers.
The logistics industry has long been male-dominated, with women making up just 1% of the UK’s HGV driver workforce. However, ATL Haulage is leading the way in changing this narrative, with its team of female drivers now growing to seven. One of these trailblazers is Anna Gicko, who passed her HGV test four years ago at the age of 34. In this interview, she shares her journey, the challenges she has overcome, and her future aspirations.
What inspired you to pursue a career as an HGV driver?
I have always loved driving, and I have long admired HGVs. During the COVID pandemic, I finally had the opportunity to make this dream come true and decided to go for it.
How did you find the training experience through ATL’s driver training programme?
I’m grateful for the opportunity, especially to ATL’s fleet manager for believing in me and our driver trainer for her patience during my training. The support and mentoring I received were invaluable and have made me the driver I am today.
What were your biggest challenges during training, and how did you overcome them?
There were many challenges throughout the training process. For me, the biggest hurdle was mastering reversing, getting comfortable with the truck, and feeling in control. It took practice and patience, but with the proper guidance, I overcame those challenges.
Breaking into a traditionally male-dominated field, how does it feel to be part of a growing group of female HGV drivers within the ATL fleet?
It’s fantastic to see more and more women gaining the confidence to drive HGVs. It’s great to be part of a movement that shows there’s a place for female drivers in this industry.
Have you faced any stereotypes or misconceptions about women in the industry, and how do you address them?
I’ve been lucky not to experience anything too negative. Occasionally, I get a surprised look from people, but once they see my driving skills, they usually come back with a compliment, especially when it comes to reversing!
What advice would you give other women considering a career in HGV driving?
If you love driving and feel strong enough to handle the everyday challenges of the road, don’t think twice – go for it.
How has ATL Haulage supported your journey as a newly qualified driver?
For almost three months, I was under the supervision of an incredible and highly professional female driver. She shared all her knowledge with me, ensuring I performed at my best. Even after becoming a solo driver, the support from the office is always there – our fleet manager, an ex-HGV driver, is always willing to help, as is our night shift operator, along with many others on the team.
Did having access to ATL’s driver training programme and team mentors help build your confidence on the road?
ATL provides drivers with unparalleled support and training. However, ultimately, confidence comes from experience on the road. The more you drive, the more you build that confidence.
What does being part of the ATL family mean to you?
I’ve been with ATL for almost four years and am so happy to be part of this company. ATL know that my work is my passion, and I spend a lot of time doing what I love.
What do you enjoy most about your role as an HGV driver?
I enjoy the freedom, learning something new every day, and visiting places I would never have seen if I weren’t an HGV driver.
Have you had any standout moments or achievements since joining ATL?
There have been so many! I experience something new daily, meet interesting people, and grow as a driver. This job either makes you or breaks you, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
How do you feel about the work-life balance in your new role?
I spend a lot of time working, which suits me perfectly.
Looking to the future, what are your aspirations within the logistics industry?
I don’t plan to stop at being an HGV driver—there are already plans for bigger and better things ahead.
How do you hope to inspire other women to follow in your footsteps?
If you think you’ve got what it takes, explore the HGV driving world. I would be more than happy to help and support other women become the best female drivers they can be.
Where do you see yourself as part of the ATL team in the next five years?
I’d love to continue growing within ATL, but life changes daily, and you never know what the future holds!
